Cadman’s Four American Indian Songs, Op. 45 (1909) sets poems by Nelle Richmond Eberhart to tribal melodies (Omaha, Iroquois, etc.), forging a blend of indigenous source material and Western art-song tradition. One source notes that the first song, “From the Land of the Sky-Blue Water,” was based on an Omaha melody collected by Alice C. Fletcher, and became widely popular after soprano Lillian Nordica added it to her 1909 concert tour.
