Louis Vierne's Symphony No. 3 in F-sharp Minor, Op. 28 stands as a monumental work in the Romantic organ repertoire. Composed in 1911 and premiered in March 1912, this symphony is often regarded as the most inspired and best-structured among his six organ symphonies.
Structured in five movements—Allegro maestoso, Cantilène, Intermezzo, Adagio, and Final—the symphony showcases Vierne's mastery in thematic development, chromatic harmony, and architectural form. The opening movement presents an "aggressive call to arms" with jagged rhythmic edges, setting a dramatic tone. The subsequent movements offer contrasting moods, from the lyrical Cantilène to the scherzo-like Intermezzo, culminating in a virtuosic Final that features elements typical of a French toccata.
